Diabetic foot care at home

Gentle preventative foot care to help protect your comfort

Diabetes can affect circulation, nerve sensation, skin health, and healing. Because of this, small foot concerns such as dry skin, pressure areas, thick nails, calluses, or minor wounds can become more serious if they are not addressed early. Daily foot checks and regular professional foot care can help lower the risk of complications.

At Sole Survivor Foot Care, diabetic foot care is provided with a gentle, non-judgmental approach. Each appointment includes education, assessment, and a care plan based on your needs.

Easy ways to care for your feet at home

Check your feet every day for:

  • cuts

  • cracks

  • redness

  • swelling

  • blisters

  • corns

  • calluses

  • drainage

  • changes in skin or nail colour.

Use a mirror or ask someone you trust if seeing the bottoms of your feet is difficult.

Wash your feet daily with warm, not hot, water; do not soak your feet. Dry carefully, especially between the toes. Apply moisturizer to dry skin, but avoid putting lotion between the toes because extra moisture can increase the risk of skin breakdown or infection.

Wear clean, dry socks and properly fitting footwear. Avoid walking barefoot, even indoors, to reduce the risk of unnoticed injury. Check inside your shoes before putting them on to make sure there are no objects, rough seams, or areas that may rub.

Trim nails straight across and gently file sharp edges. Do not dig into the corners or cut nails too short. If your nails are thick, curved, painful, difficult to reach, or hard to safely manage, professional foot care is recommended.

What to avoid

  • Avoid cutting corns or calluses yourself

  • Using sharp tools

  • Using medicated corn pads

  • Soaking your feet

  • Treating wounds at home without guidance.

If you notice a wound, signs of infection, sudden pain, colour changes, swelling, or an ingrown toenail, seek medical advice promptly.
