Foot Care Guide: Lotioning Your Feet with Limited Flexibility

A simple, safe way to care for your skin without bending or reaching

Taking care of your skin is an important part of foot health, especially if reaching your feet is difficult. Dry skin can lead to cracking, discomfort, and increased risk of infection.

This method uses a plate and gentle movement to help you apply lotion safely and independently.

What you will need

  • A clean plate (plastic or non-breakable is best)

  • Your preferred foot lotion

  • A stable chair

  • A clean towel

Before you begin

  • Make sure the floor area is clean and dry

  • Sit in a stable, comfortable chair

  • Keep your towel nearby to wipe your hands or feet if needed

💡 Choose a lotion that absorbs well and is not overly greasy to reduce slipping risk.

Step-by-step method

1. Prepare the lotion

  • Place a small amount of lotion onto the plate

  • Sit in a sturdy chair

  • Set the plate on the floor in front of you

2. Start with one heel

  • Place one foot onto the plate

  • Gently move your heel and rub it on the top of the opposite foot.

3. Ball of your foot

  • Dip the ball of your foot in the lotion and rub your feet together, almost like a fly.

4. Switch sides

  • Repeat the same steps with the opposite foot

  • Take your time and move slowly to stay comfortable and balanced

This helps distribute lotion evenly across both feet.

Important safety tips

  • Avoid putting lotion between your toes to reduce moisture buildup and infection risk

  • Put socks on before getting out of the chair

  • Do not stand during this process

  • Wipe any excess lotion back onto the plate with the lip after

Who should use extra caution?

If you have:

  • Diabetes

  • Reduced sensation in your feet

  • Open areas, wounds, or infections

👉 It is best to check with a healthcare provider or have assistance when needed.

When to seek help.

Book professional foot care if you notice:

  • Cracked skin that is not improving

  • Thickened or difficult-to-manage nails

  • Painful areas or pressure spots

  • Any signs of infection
